SharedFilePolicy System Parameter with its JSON value in the Web Client
Example of the SharedFilePolicy System Parameter with allowedMimeTypes, defaultLinkTarget, and defaultDeliveryBehavior.

How It Works

The File Library rejects an upload whose MIME type is not in allowedMimeTypes. Shared File links in Articles and in Shared File Custom Metadata values open with the default link target and delivery behaviour from this policy.

The policy covers only the File Library and the Shared File metadata type. The Image Library has its own rules, and private Attachment values in Custom Metadata keep their own copy of each file.

Value Format

Property Type Meaning Example value
allowedMimeTypes string array MIME types accepted for File Library uploads. Leave out executables and other formats you don't want in the shared library. application/pdf, application/json, Office Open XML formats, application/zip
defaultLinkTarget string Where a Shared File link opens. NewTab
defaultDeliveryBehavior string How the browser receives the file. BrowserDefault lets the browser show files it can display, such as PDF, JSON, XML, and text, instead of downloading them. BrowserDefault

Example, the configuration documented for the Files feature:

{
  "allowedMimeTypes": [
    "application/pdf",
    "text/plain",
    "text/csv",
    "application/json",
    "application/xml",
    "text/xml",
    "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document",
    "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet",
    "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation",
    "application/zip"
  ],
  "defaultLinkTarget": "NewTab",
  "defaultDeliveryBehavior": "BrowserDefault"
}

Choosing a Value

  • Allow the business and technical document formats your teams need for runbooks, schemas, and partner documents in Articles and Custom Metadata, and review the list with those teams.
  • Keep executables and scripts out of allowedMimeTypes.
  • Keep the link behaviour predictable, so users know whether a file opens in the browser or in a new tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was my upload rejected?

The file's MIME type is not in allowedMimeTypes. Compare the file's detected MIME type with the list, and add it only if the format should be allowed.
