Manage Custom Fields

Custom Fields add extra, typed values to the entities in the Repository Model. They are a legacy feature, so most installations keep only a few and move new documentation to Custom Metadata. This page shows how to keep the Custom Fields you still use clean and correct.

  • ✅ Add and edit Custom Fields
  • ✅ Delete Custom Fields, and restore them if you change your mind
  • ✅ Copy the API URL to reuse the list in reports and scripts

On this page, an administrator, or a user whose Role may modify Custom Fields, learns to manage the Custom Field list. Business users who only look up Custom Fields start with the Custom Fields Overview instead.

Note

The Custom Fields menus are visible only when the DisableCustomFields System Parameter is false. The default is true, so the menus are hidden on a new installation. Custom Fields are a legacy feature; prefer Custom Metadata.

Understanding delete and restore

Delete in Nodinite is a soft delete: the Custom Field is flagged as deleted and hidden from the list, but it stays in the database, so you can restore it. See Show deleted records for how this works across Nodinite.

A Custom Field's life after Delete. Green: active. Yellow: deleted, and anyone who may modify Custom Fields can restore it. See Show deleted records.

Who can do what

Action Who can do it Can you undo it?
Add a Custom Field Create on Custom Fields in the Role ✅ Yes, delete it
Edit a Custom Field Modify on Custom Fields (Permission Set for the Repository Model) ⚠️ Change it back by hand
Delete a Custom Field Modify on Custom Fields ✅ Yes, restore it
Restore a Custom Field Modify on Custom Fields ✅ Yes, delete it again

Everything on this page also works from the Repository menu for users whose Role allows it; the Administration menu needs the built-in Administrator Role.

Every right is set per Role on its Repository Permissions tab. Users first need the global Access right on Repository (Repository Access), then Access on the Custom Fields row; Create and Modify sit on the Custom Fields Permissions for all row. A Deny in any of the user's Roles always wins.

Find the Custom Fields list

Open Administration > CMDB Attributes > Custom Fields, or Repository > Custom Fields. From Administration, clicking a Custom Field opens it for editing; from Repository, it opens it for viewing.

Frequently asked questions / Troubleshooting

I deleted a Custom Field by mistake. Can I get it back?

Yes. Check Include deleted Custom Fields, then restore it.

Why can't I see the Custom Fields menu?

The DisableCustomFields System Parameter hides the Custom Fields menus while it is true, which is the default. One of your Roles also needs Access on Custom Fields, see the Permission Set for the Repository Model.
